Kate Moloney

Kate has recently completed a Masters of Music Studies (Performance) and holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance) Honours Class I at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she studied with world acclaimed harpist and teacher, Alice Giles AM. Kate is a full member of the Music Teachers Association. She is a recipient of the inaugural ABC Classic and Jazz Commissioning Fund 2021 to commission a new solo harp work by emerging composer Christine Pan.

Kate is Principal Harp of The Metropolitan Orchestra and was their inaugural Young Artists in 2017. Principal Harp of Sydney Youth Orchestras for five years ending in 2019. She has played as Guest Principal Harp with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra, Ensemble Apex, Australian Youth Orchestras and Sydney Youth Orchestras. Kate recently played Principal Harp in the Handa Phantom of the Opera on the Harbour season and toured regional NSW and VIC with Momentum Ensemble. Kate is the harpist for Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra and has played for other Sydney orchestras including Balmain Sinfonia, Mosman Symphony Orchestra, TOPS Orchestra and as part of the Australian Institute of Music’s opera productions. In 2019, Kate was the harpist for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney and played with Amy Shark at the 2020 ARIA awards.

Kate often plays as part of recital series throughout Sydney including The Women’s Club and St John’s Dee Why. In 2017 Kate won the Sutherland Shire & St George Youth Music Awards, and at age 9 she won the Under 14’s section at the Australian Harp Festival Eisteddfod. She has had varied performance opportunities since, such as playing solo on the Sydney Opera House stage as part of the Arts Unit Festival of Instrumental Music.

In addition to harp, Kate plays flute/piccolo and is a singer. She has played flute with ensembles throughout Sydney including Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra. She currently sings with Sydney Philharmonia Choir’s VOX ensemble, touring with them to Bermagui in 2019 and performing at Sydney Festival in 2021. Kate is part of flute and harp duo Classical Elegance which services weddings and functions throughout the Sydney area.
